Crowbar will generate an (Source Model Data) or DMX file, along with the animation files. Step 2: Import into Blender

Before converting to FBX, you must decompile the Source Engine Model (MDL/VTX) into a format Blender can read, such as SMD. . Navigate to the Decompile tab.

As the previous section alluded to, the .vtx extension is used for different purposes, and recognizing this is step one. Here’s what you might have:

: Use a tool like Crowbar to decompile the .mdl , .vvd , and .vtx files. This will output .smd (StudioMDL) files.

Since VTX files are part of a multi-file model system, you cannot convert them in isolation. You must decompile the entire model set.

Sometimes the model translates properly, but surfaces appear invisible or hollow from certain angles in the final FBX.

Proprietary formats die out when engines are abandoned. Converting historical project assets to FBX ensures they can be opened and repurposed a decade from now.

Change to Copy and click the small icon next to it to embed textures directly into the FBX.
