The film is an adaptation of the 1958 short story Per cause imprecisate (For Unspecified Reasons) by the Italian writer Carlo Bernari. However, Vancini, along with legendary screenwriter Suso Cecchi d'Amico ( Bicycle Thieves ), made significant changes to the source material. While Bernari’s original story was set in Rome, Vancini transplanted the narrative to his own hometown of Ferrara. This decision was crucial, as it allowed him to use the city's distinct political and social history to enrich the film's themes.
