In 1966, the German radio station Bremen commissioned Berberian to create a piece for its Pro Musica Nova festival. Instead of writing a conventional song, Berberian drew inspiration from the comic strips of her American childhood. With encouragement from her close friend, the renowned Italian novelist and semiotician , she set out to create a "sounding glossary" of comic book onomatopoeia.
