Naj-1501 Manual Patched | Netapp
Use QSFP-to-QSFP SAS cables to connect the SAS ports on the NetApp controller to the IOM12 modules on the NAJ-1501.
For daisy-chaining multiple shelves, connect the Circle port of the first shelf to the Square port of the adjacent shelf. Single-Controller Topology (Single-Path)
NetApp color-codes NAJ cables by length. Blue = 1m, Orange = 2m, Purple = 3m. If your manual says "Blue boot," do not substitute an orange boot; the signal attenuation calcs differ. Netapp Naj-1501 Manual
If you receive an AutoSupport (ASUP) message stating "Cable Fault on Port 0c" or "SAS Phy Error," the manual for the NAJ-1501 would instruct you to:
Redundant modules that manage data transfer and shelf health monitoring. Use QSFP-to-QSFP SAS cables to connect the SAS
Do not buy third-party "equivalent" SAS cables for the NAJ-1501. NetApp uses a proprietary EEPROM in the NAJ-series cables. The controller validates the cable via SMBus before enabling the link. A generic cable will cause a "Cable Authentication Failed" error in ONTAP 8.2 and later.
To connect a disk shelf containing the NAJ-1501 to a NetApp controller: Blue = 1m, Orange = 2m, Purple = 3m
Terminate the chain or leave the remaining ports open if no other shelves exist. Dual-Controller HA Topology (Multipath HA)
Whether you are expanding a legacy FAS system, building a lab, or recovering data from an old shelf, this guide—combined with the official manual—will ensure you handle the NAJ-1501 like a certified NetApp professional.
A: Like any enterprise-grade 2U storage shelf with high-speed fans, it is not quiet. It is designed for a data center environment. Users in homelab or office settings frequently note that its fan noise can be significant.
