A collection of mystical love poetry written after meeting a gifted young woman in Mecca. Ibn Arabi later wrote a commentary to explain its spiritual meanings.
Ibn 'Arabi began composing his magnum opus, Al-Futuhat al-Makkiyya — known in English as The Meccan Revelations or The Openings Revealed in Makkah — during his stay in the holy city of Mecca. According to his own accounts, he received the immense knowledge contained within its volumes from a spirit he called the "passing young" whom he encountered while circumambulating the Kaaba. This monumental work, which he started in 598 AH / 1202 CE and finished in Damascus roughly thirty years later, is widely considered the single most important book in Islamic mysticism. The book consists of 560 chapters that vary dramatically in length, from as short as a half page to several hundred pages. While modern print editions typically condense it into four compact volumes, Ibn 'Arabi's own arrangement presented the work in 37 separate volumes, each normally divided into seven parts.
