Besant wrote with striking candor that some of the sections she included "contain very numerous errors of fact, and many statements based on exoteric writings, not on esoteric knowledge". She acknowledged that an "instructed reader" would notice that Blavatsky made "possibly deliberately—many statements so confused that they are mere blinds, and other statements—probably inadvertently—that are nothing more than the exoteric misunderstandings of esoteric truths".

Conversely, some researchers point out that Besant was following Blavatsky’s expressed wishes to publish a third volume and that the 1897 publication is the "real" third volume, noting that Blavatsky herself had reorganized some of this material into what would become Volume III in 1887.

Blavatsky claimed a third volume was planned, covering the lives of occult students and the history of esoteric schools. She left notes and partial manuscripts, but she died in 1891 before completing it. Therefore,
The papers given to Besant were "quite unarranged, and had no obvious order." She took each paper as a separate section and arranged them as sequentially as possible. The editorial challenges were substantial: multiple versions of certain sections existed, some written four or five times over, each containing sentences not found in the others. Besant chose to "piece these versions together, taking the fullest as basis, and inserting therein everything added in any other versions".
