NGK BKR5EYA or Denso K16R-U (Gap: 0.8 mm / 0.031 in) Service Intervals Engine Oil & Filter: Every 5,000 to 7,500 km

This textbook was published by Mechanical Industry Press in 2013 and is designed for use in vocational automotive education programs and technical training courses.

The 5A-FE is an interference engine in specific operating conditions; therefore, timing belt failure can result in piston-to-valve contact.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise two full revolutions to seat the belt. Check that the timing marks on both the crankshaft and camshaft still line up perfectly. Torque the tensioner bolt to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).

Look down at the crankshaft timing gear. The small dimple or dot on the gear tooth must align with the raised arrow on the engine block.

Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the camshaft lobe and the shim on Intake valves 1 & 2 and Exhaust valves 1 & 3 . Record these numbers.

If blue smoke occurs only on cold startups, replace the valve stem seals. If smoke persists while accelerating, the piston rings require replacement. Engine Overheating Cause: Stuck thermostat or failed water pump impeller.

Using a torque wrench is not optional—it is essential for engine assembly. Here are some key torque values:
